Connection Assessments and Approvals (CAA)

In accordance with the Market Rules, Chapter 4, Section 6, anyone planning to construct a new or modified connection to the IESO-controlled grid is required to apply to the IESO and complete the Connection Assessment and Approval (CAA) process.  A new or modified connection to the IESO-controlled grid includes:

• the connection of a new or modified generation facility to the IESO-controlled grid;
• the connection of a new or modified embedded generation facility greater than 10 MW;
• the connection of a new or modified transmission facility;
• the connection of a new or modified load facility or a one time addition of load greater than 10 MW; and
• the connection of a new or modified ancillary services facility.

The Connection Assessment and Approval process allows the IESO to assess the impact of new or modified connections on the reliability of the integrated power system. A connection applicant does not have to be a Market Participant in order to apply for Connection Assessment and Approval; however, the required participant authorization and facility registration processes must be completed prior to participation in the IESO-administered markets.
