Evolving Ontario’s Electricity MarketIn Ontario, the wholesale price of electricity is determined through the IESO-administered markets, where suppliers and consumers of electricity bid and offer to produce or consume energy. In 2012, the market will mark its 10-year anniversary, providing Ontarians with an open and efficient approach to managing the province’s electricity system. Over that time, however, the electricity system has been changing. In light of this ongoing change, the IESO created a forum to address the future role and development of the IESO-administered markets. With members from across the electricity sector, the Electricity Market Forum examined emerging issues that impact market activity and the effectiveness of the price signal. It was also charged with drawing a series of recommendations for the implementation of market improvements. These recommendations and accompanying road map can be found here: The full report "Reconnecting Supply and Demand: How Improving Electricity Pricing Can Help Integrate a Changing Supply Mix, Increase Efficiency and Empower Consumers", prepared by Forum Chair George Vegh, can be accessed here. |
