Market Entry

Participating in the IESO-Administered Markets

Who must become a participant?

Any organization wishing to participate in the IESO-administered markets or that causes or permits electricity to be conveyed into, through or out of the IESO-controlled grid must be authorized as a market participant. In particular, all generators, loads, transmitters and distributors with facilities forming part of, or connected to the IESO-controlled grid must be authorized and have their facilities registered with the IESO. Other companies have a choice about whether to participate in the IESO-administered market.

What's Involved?

Market Entry involves three main tasks to demonstrate that your organization meets the necessary legal, financial, and technical/operational requirement:

  1. Authorization as a Market Participant.
  2. Registration of Facilities.
  3. Registration of Metering Installations.
  4. Online Security: Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Digital Certification

You can begin to register facilities as soon as you have applied for authorization, but registration cannot be completed until you are authorized as a market participant.

The exemption process (formerly waiver process) allows organizations to gain exceptions to the application of certain standards and obligations.

Should you need further information or support, contact the IESO at customer.relations@ieso.ca.
