Online Security: Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Digital Certification

The IESO has implemented a security process and technology that will protect the confidentiality of online communications and business transactions between Market Participants and the IESO. PKI - which refers to the combination of encryption, software and technology - provides a security guarantee to Market Participants that the confidentiality of Internet-based transactions is maintained at all times.

To gain secure access to market systems via the PKI process, Market Participants will need to register to obtain “production digital certificates” containing specific identifying information about individual users.

Registration Requirements Include:

  1. Signing the IESO Certificate Subscriber Agreement (CSA) (IMP_AGR_0016) by the Market Participant Authorized Signatory.

  2. Choosing one of three possible identity proofing models (or a combination thereof). The Identity Management Operations Guide (IMP_GDE_0088) outlines the proofing options available to market participants.

  3. Submitting the Identity and System Access Management Form (1276).

  4. IESO System Access Incumbency Letter Template

  5. Installing the Certificate Lifecycle System (CLS) software for the creation of a security profile. See Chapter 10 of the PKI Operations Guide for CLS installation details.

  6. Initializing the certificates of individual and/or application subscribers.

To assist market participants with the certificate registration process, the IESO has created the Step-by-Step Guide to Digital Certificates (PKI) at the IESO.
