SUPPLY OVERVIEW

There is approximately 31,600 MW of installed generation in Ontario's electricity market. Total daily generator availability is posted on the IESO website. The amount of generation available is dependent on outages on part or all of a generating unit. Here's an overview of Ontario's supply situation:

Supply Outlook

Over the next two decades, Ontario has to refurbish or replace nearly 25,000 MW of generating capacity. The IESO's Ontario Reliability Outlook identifies a number of new projects in various stages of development to address this need.

The fourth issue of the Ontario Reliability Outlook points to a positive outlook for Ontario’s longer-term reliability picture, but indicates that going forward, the focus will need to shift to ensuring that both generation and transmission projects are implemented in time to meet needs. The IESO will be working with the Ontario Power Authority to address the integration and operational challenges of a complex and changing generation mix.

Imports and Exports

Ontario is capable of importing or exporting approximately 4,000 MW at any one time, depending on system conditions. The transmission grid is connected to Manitoba, Quebec, New York, Michigan and Minnesota.
